Il film è tratto dall’omonimo racconto di Edgar Allan Poe, ambientato nello stesso periodo dell’Autore nell’ AppeninoToscoemiliano, così come descritto nell’ opera. Due uomini, un cavaliere e il suo servitore, sfuggiti a un’imboscata, approdano a un castello disabitato. Il servitore cura come può il suo signore ferito e trascorre così la notte. Il signore, sdraiato sul letto, osserva i numerosi quadri appesi alle pareti e ne legge le caratteristiche su un catalogo lì trovato. Tra di essi, un ritratto su cornice ovale, ritrae una giovane e bellissima donna, della quale il cavaliere legge la triste storia.

Film is from the homonymous tale of Edgard Allan Poe, adapted to Appenino Toscoemiliano, in the same period of the Author, so like in the tale. Two men, a rider and his servant, escped from an ambush, arrive to a deserte castle. The servant takes care of his sir offended, as he can, and so the night passes. The sir, lying on the bad, look at numerous paintings appended on the walls and reads their characteristics on a calogue there founded. Among them, an Oval Portrait, represents a young and nice woman, of whom the rider peruses her sad history.
